Over 100 people attended the musical tribute to Mother Laverne P. Reed, who was recently honored at Zion Hill Baptist Church in Rodeo.
Mother Reed graduated form Jones High School in 1942 and graduated from Philander Smith College in North Little Rock Arkansas. She majored in music and minored in elementary education.
She came to California in 1971. She married Deacon Albert Reed, now deceased, and joined the staff of the West Contra Costa United School District where she worked for 18 years as a music teacher before retiring.
Music has been her love and joy, and she has provided lessons to many young people in the community.
Mother Reed has enjoyed a number of years as minister of music at Providence Baptist Church. She contributed a lot to Providence in the years preceding her decline in health.
She founded a Life Support Group that dealt with health matters and also facilitated many health fairs. She served as director of the Tape Ministry, co-facilitated the State Rallies along with Mothers Sadie Jackson and Rebecca McLane.
She was a member of the Mothers/Deaconesses Board and served as musician for the Male Chorus. Her life has been full, and she has utilized her gifts and talents as to the Body of Believers.
This event may have been a farewell celebration because her family members are planning to take her back to Texas with them.
