A once neglected former play lot on South 2nd Street in the Sante Fe neighborhood in Richmond is transitioning into a vibrant and active space with basketball and futsal (soccer) courts, children’s play areas and a seating area.
The grand opening for Sante Fe Union Park, located between Florida and Main avenues, took place on Saturday, July 18 at noon.
The renovation effort began when The Santa Fe Neighborhood Council, working with police to make their area safer, decided the lot could fill a void in youth activity left by the closure of the Martin Luther King Center. Neighbors, the City of Richmond, Local 342 and the Building and Construction Trades Council collaborated to make the renovations, according to the nonprofit For Richmond, which also contributed.
Once covered with weeds, cracked concrete and rusted fences, the lot has made a significant comeback.
