Jamil Muhammad, a veteran of a long career in advocacy and activism, has been named the Interim Executive Director of the Marin Grassroots. He is replacing John Young, who recently retired from the same position.
A native Cincinnatian, Muhammad first began his work on behalf of others after attending Howard University in Washington D.C.
Muhammad later served as program director of the Washington D.C.-based Wedded Bliss Foundation, a community based organization that helps teens, singles and couples develop healthy relationships and healthy marriages to improve their lives, better the outcomes for children and create stronger communities.
Muhammad also has worked with the Marin City Health and Wellness Center, where he helped create The Defenders, an empowerment group that helps boys ages 11 – 18 develop in the areas such as self-esteem, self-discipline, respect for family and social relationships, resiliency against negative peer pressure and academic progress
He is the recipient of numerous awards and citations, including Omega Psi Phi Community Service Award; Baltimore City Outstanding Citizen; Sacramento and California Men of Honor.
Muhammad is a student and a longtime helper of Minister Louis Farrakhan. In 2001, he was appointed as the National Spokesman for the Nation of Islam (NOI) and for the Minister Louis Farrakhan. His service in the NOI included heading up Mosques in New Orleans, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Atlanta, and leading Muslims throughout the Deep South.
Muhammad is the father of seven children, four of whom have also graduated from Howard University. His three other children plan to attend Howard University after they graduate from high school.
