Dhameera Carlotta Ahmad, NEE Carlotta Basseau Simon, born January 11, 1950 passed from this life on July 24, 2017, in San Francisco, CA. Dhameera was a retired Principal from the Oakland Unified School District, where she taught from 25 years. She was the first of five children born to Joseph (Bunny) Simon, Sr. and the late Betty Opal Simon Johnson.
Dhameera Ahmad, A native San Franciscan, entered San Francisco State, in 1968. As a teenage revolutionary, she was a student leader in the struggle to establish a black studies department. She later received her bachelors degree from Cal State Hayward and her Masters degree from University of California at Berkeley.
She was a card-carrying member of the Black Panther party. The Party ‘s principal of “serve the people”, guided her political and community activism throughout her life. Her works spanned from the Nation of Islam, to feeding the homeless and transient, to teaching parenting classes to incarcerated mothers. Dhameera also, worked tirelessly for over a half a century to free US political prisoners.
Dhameera is survived by her husband Saadat Ahmad of 40 years, and her children Nisa, Azizah, Yusuf and Ismael Ahmad, her four granchildren, and four siblings.
Dhameera was a highly respected and loved member of the Bay Area Islamic community and an active member of the lighthouse mosque, Oakland, CA. A Janazah prayer will be held at Lighthouse, Wednesday, July 26th at 2PM
