EOYDC Awards 39 College Scholarships to Local Youth


The East Oakland Youth Development Center (EOYDC) has awarded 39 college scholarships and honored “7 Champions for Youth” at the center’s annual Pathway to College & Careers (PTC2) fundraising –“Something for Everyone” – event.

In addition, more than 20 recent college graduates were presented at the event.

Champion for Youth honorees in attendance included Angela Glover Blackwell, founder and president of PolicyLink; Daniel Boggan Jr., former Clorox Company/CA endowment board member; and  EOYDC Trustee Father Jay Matthews, rector of the Cathedral of Christ the Light.

Also recognized were Saundra Andrews, former senior field representative for Congresswoman Barbara Lee; Shonda Scott, CEO of 360 Total Concepts; Yancie Davis. assistant director of admissions, Diversity Outreach for Stanford University.

The event took place Sunday, July 30 at Coliseum Lexus of Oakland 7273 Oakport St.

Event sponsors included Southwest Airlines, Kazan, McClain Satterley & Greenwood, Kaiser Permanente, Coliseum Lexus of Oakland, Studio Bondy Architecture, US Bank, The Clorox Company, Northern California Community Loan Fund, and PG&E.

Pathway to College and Careers, which launched in 2003, is one of EOYDC’s most celebrated programs. Through a combination of workshops, individualized coaching, college mentoring, Southwest Airlines sponsored college tours, and academic and financial support, the program helps high school students transition into college successfully and sees them through their undergraduate, graduate, and professional careers.

The program’s graduation rate has been 86 percent for four years. Since its inception, the program has provided over $500,000 in scholarship assistance.
