Since 2008, Oakland Natives Give Back, a local education nonprofit, has held an “Attend and Achieve”Back-to- School Rally to help Oakland public school youth start the school year prepared to learn.

This year’s Attend and Achieve Back-to-School Rally will take place Sunday, Aug. 13 from noon to 5:30 p.m. Oakland City Hall plaza.

Attendees will have access to parenting and academic achievement workshops, college readiness resources, celebrity appearances, speakers, performances, free food and a range of prizes.

This year, Oakland Natives Give Back will distribute 250 student bus passes for high school students, 1,500 pairs of shoes, and 2,500 student backpacks filled with age-appropriate school supplies.

Given the research that suggests that a child’s attendance in the first month of school is predictive of his or her attendance for the year, this rally helps ensure that students have all the tools they need to start the school year prepared to attend and achieve all year long.
