Acts Full Gospel Hosts Back to School, Health Fair

Acts Full Gospel Church of God in Christ (AFGC) hosted it’s Back to School Bash and Health Fair on Saturday, August 26, where hundreds of backpacks and supplies were distributed to students returning to Bay Area schools.

“We take education very seriously and want to ensure that our children in the community are well prepared for school,” said Pastor Joseph Cotton of AFCG Next Generation Youth Ministry. “Any child can succeed with the right support and essential supplies.”

AFGC Next Generation Youth Ministry serves youth ages 12-19 with Tuesday night bible study, PlayStation gaming, Xbox gaming, basketball, pool and additional activities.

“We offer free tutoring every Tuesday night from 5:30p.m. to 7:15 p.m.,” said Dr. Doris Limbrick, founder of Acts Christian Academy. The school, located on the AFGC campus, serves children kindergarten through 8th grade.

Sponsored by Nike, Higher Ground, Revitalizing Our Children’s Success and AFGC’s Plumbing Ministry, the festival included a health fair and antique car show. Attendees had the opportunity to have their blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose checked.

Anna Smith of AFGC’s Healthy Temple Ministry noted many people die or are  poor health because they are unaware of rising blood pressures and spikes in glucose or cholesterol levels.

“It is so important to monitor your levels to prevent heart disease and diabetes,” she said. “Combined with a healthy diet people can prevent diabetes, heart attacks and strokes just by knowing their levels.”

Horse rides, a bounce house and zumba exercises were available at the family friendly event while vendors sold desserts, bath and body products, clothing and Christian books.

Simultaneously two-dozen antique cars were on display competing in the Hot August Classic Car competition, sponsored by Lane Partners.

“We wanted to have something for everyone, said Bishop Bob Jackson founder of AFGC. “As a church we serve the entire community so when we provide an event of this scale, we have something for the men, the women and the children,” he said. “This is a great way to end the summer and send our children back to school with a family fun event.”
