On Thursday, the Mentoring Center (TMC) announced a unique collaboration with FamFirst Foundation to provide mentorship and programming at the West Oakland Youth Center.
“We are really pleased to bring the strength of FamFirst to our efforts to serve West Oakland youth,” says Celsa Snead, CEO of the Mentoring Center. “The founders, Josh Johnson and Marshawn Lynch, are connected to West Oakland and continue to serve the community through unique programs that provide youth the opportunity to be exposed to entrepreneurship, literacy, and athletics.”
Under the agreement, TMC and FamFirst will jointly provide programs at the center for youth ranging from elementary school to young adults.
“FamFirst has always been committed to Oakland Youth, this collaboration is merely an extension of our current efforts,” says Josh Johnson.
Since 1991, the Mentoring Center has served Oakland’s youth through transformative mentoring and serves as a technical assistance and training provider for Bay Area mentoring programs. TMC operates programs at the West Oakland Youth Center under a contract with the City of Oakland.
“I am pleased that TMC has been able to bring in a team that will enhanceyouth-focused programming to the center as envisioned by West Oakland youth,” says Councilmember Lynette Gibson McElhaney, who represents the neighborhood where the center is located. “I am excited that the sons of Oakland are dedicated to giving opportunities for our youth to thrive. These men are the role models we need to bring hope and opportunity to our families.”
