College of Alameda (CoA) is at the forefront of the “big data” revolution. “Big data” is an umbrella term that encompasses all of those established and emergent technologies that impact our lives. Such technologies as artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR), and the Internet of Things (IoT) are all technologies dependent on crunching vast quantities of data. “Big data” is part of an ecosystem that can be characterized by, for example:
- Sophisticated techniques for analyzing data, such as machine learning and natural language processing
- Business intelligence, cloud computing and databases
- Visual presentations, such as charts, graphs and other pictorial displays of data
Increasingly, business and other companies use “big data” systems to drive strategic decision making and product development. Skills using data visualization techniques and location services provide onramps to well-paying careers. Whenever you “check-in” using your favorite app, geographic information systems (GIS) are driving your search.
Two universal technology platforms are being taught in Spring 2018 at College of Alameda: Introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Introduction to Tableau Analytics. You do not need prior Computer Science or Mathematics’ experience to enroll in these courses. These courses are intended as introductions to the field of “big data.” Students can apply the technology platform skills learned in these courses and other Computer Information Science courses a variety of real world occupational fields, such as:
- International Development
- Information Technology
To meet your needs, courses to advance your skills and career are available on campus or online. College of Alameda offers degree and certificate programs in Computer Information Systems and Business Administration. College of Alameda is conveniently located along Webster Street in Alameda with access to several AC Transit Express busses to BART and plenty of on-site parking. We look forward to seeing you at CoA.
