The Oakland Parks, Recreations & Youth Development (OPRYD) Department kicked off their youth basketball league last week in the newly renovated gym at Bushrod Recreation Center, which was recently donated by Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors.

Over 500 families city-wide came together to balance the competition with sportsmanship and discuss the importance of the new OPRYD slogan: Imagine. Inspire. Invest.

The day was energized by host Mr. Community of Youth Sports Nation, who facilitated youth and parent activities involving health, basketball skills, team competitions, and the completion of the video filming of the new OPRYD theme song “Parks N Recs.”

According to OPRYD Sports Ambassador, Terry Butler, parents in attendance were pleased with the new direction of the Oakland Parks, Recreations & Youth Development.

Butler recalled how celebrity support in the past worked well for the youth.

“Many professional athletes from the Oakland area such as NBA Basketball Hall of Famer Gary Payton and Brian Shaw, utilized youth basketball leagues to develop life skills,” said Butler.

The organization’s director anticipates a strong future program participants.

“Our mission is to meet the specific needs of people and communities both at the neighborhood level and regionally throughout the City of Oakland,” said OPRYD Director, J. Nicholas Williams.
