Joan Morgan Explores 20 Years of “Miseducation of Lauryn Hill”, Aug. 30

In celebration of the twentieth anniversary of the acclaimed, highly influential debut album, “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill”, KPFA Radio, Hard Knock Radio, and Marcus Books will host pioneering Author Joan Morgan for an in depth discussion about her new book  “She Begat This” and the continued relevance of Hill’s album today.

Released in 1998, Lauryn Hill’s first solo album is often cited by music critics as one of the most important recordings of all time. Artists from Beyoncé to Nicki Minaj to Janelle

Monae have called it an inspiration. In 2017 it was included in the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress, as well as named the second-greatest album by a woman in history by NPR.

Morgan coined the term “hip-hop feminism” in 1999 with the publication of “When Chickenheads Come Home to Roost”, a book now studied at colleges across the country. Joan has taught at Duke University, Stanford and The New School.

The event will take place on Thursday, August 30th at 7:30pm at First Congregational Church of Oakland, 2501 Harrison St. Advance tickets can be purchased at or at Marcus Books. Renowned radio journalist and social justice advocate Davey D will moderate the discussion.
