Women in Ministry Series (Part 6): Rev. Dr. Traci Blackmon, Senior Pastor and Executive Minister

“We prepare our members and leaders to be engaged in ministry in the present and future church, and we embrace all kinds of communities and new modes of thinking. Why? Because God is still speaking.”
This “Who We Are” statement of Christ the King United Church of Christ in Florissant, Missouri, where Rev. Dr. Traci Blackmon is the first woman and 18th Senior Pastor in the church’s 162-year history, could be a personal description of her local, national, and international ministry. She serves with “an expanded understanding of church as a sacred launching pad of community engagement and change.”
She is described by the United Church of Christ, where she is the Executive Minister of Justice and Local Church Ministries, as “a featured voice with many media outlets…Rev. Blackmon’s communal leadership and work in the aftermath of the killing of Michael Brown, Jr., in Ferguson, MO has gained her both national and international recognition and audiences from the White House to the Carter Center to the Vatican.”
She wrote the White Privilege curriculum for UCC and toured the US with clergy that included Rev. Dr. William Barber, proclaiming the need for a “Moral Revival” in our nation.
Rev. Dr. Blackmon was initially ordained by the African Methodist Episcopal Church, served over nine years in ministry, then was ordained in the United Church of Christ. A registered nurse for 25 years, she has Master of Divinity and Honorary Doctoral degrees from Eden Theological Seminary.
Her signature initiatives include “Healthy Mind, Body, and Spirit,” a mobile faith-based outreach program she designed to improve health outcomes in poor communities, programs for clergy to learn to assess health in congregational life, an intergenerational health symposium for women and girls, and “Souls to the Polls STL,” successful in providing over 2,800 rides to polling places.
Pastor Blackmon, mother of three adult children, resides in St. Louis, Missouri and Cleveland, Ohio. She has visited the Bay Area multiple times and was revival speaker at Allen Temple Baptist Church in 2017.
