Emmit A. Powell, radio and television broadcaster, producer and founder of Emmit Powell Gospel Elites, died a few days short of his birthday celebration scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 15, at Third Baptist Church in San Francisco. He was 84.
Powell hosted Gospel Caravan, starting in 1973, on KPOO.FM. 89.5 and since 1975, the Gospel Ex-perience on KPFA.FM. 94.1
Born in Tallahassee, Florida on Dec. 18, 1933, Powell founded the Gospel Elites in 1976, presenting the finest in blues-based inspirational gospel music. The group record extensively since 1980 and was nominated for three Grammy awards.
Among other venues, the Gospel Elites performed at the Sydney Opera House in Australia, the Gewandehaus in Leipzig, Germany; the Hercules Saal in Munich, Germany; and the Pori Jazz Festival in Finland with James Brown and B.B. King.
A celebration of life services will be held for Emmit Powell Saturday, Dec. 29, at Third Baptist Church, 1399 McAllister St., San Francisco.
