District 6 Councilmember Loren Taylor celebrated March for Meals 2019 by delivering a meal to Mrs. Liz Gilmore, an 89-year-old meal recipient who is a longtime resident of Oakland and civil rights activist.
Mrs. Gilmore is the widow of Carter Gilmore, the first African American Oakland City Councilmember elected to office in 1977. Mr. Gilmore served until 1990.
Mrs. Gilmore receives her daily meal and safety check-in visit from SOS Meals on Wheels, the Meals on Wheels provider for Oakland and Central Alameda County. SOS Meals on Wheels produces and delivers 1,200 meals daily.
March for Meals celebrates the anniversary of signing into law a measure that established the Older Americans Act Nutrition Program. For more than 45 years, this vital legislation has authorized local Meals on Wheels programs to deliver congregate and home-delivered meals and other critical social support services to vulnerable seniors in virtually every community across the country.
