Michael Peters, head coach of the three-time defending California Champion McClymonds High School Warriors football team has won the 2018-19 California Football Coach of the Year, as voted on by the California Coaches Association.

The association told Coach Peters, “Your dedication to the profession has been a positive image for high school sports in your section and California.” Himself a McClymonds graduate, Peters has been with the team for 29 years, including six seasons as head coach.

He won this award after leading the Warriors to three straight state championships, which were capped off last December when they beat Garfield High School from Los Angeles, 32-6 at Laney College. Peters will receive his award at a banquet in Fresno in June. He said it came as a big surprise to him.

“It’s a great honor. I’m excited to go down to the banquet. It’s huge.” He added he believes he’s the first African American coach to win the award in its history. Peters and the Warriors dedicated this past season to Dean Hodges, the team’s longtime equipment manager and one of Peters’ best friends, who died last summer.

The Coach of the Year award has been handed out for decades, and this is the first time in 21 years that an Oakland Athletic League football coach has won it. The last time that OUSD had a California Coach of the Year was 1998, when Skyline High School’s then-coach John Beam took home the award.

“I couldn’t be more proud of Coach Peters, his coaching staff and his players,” said OUSD Superintendent Kyla Johnson-Trammell. “What the team has done over the years, including winning the Oakland Section Championship, the Silver Bowl, nine straight times is incredible,” she said. “Coach Peters isn’t just a coach. He demands his players excel in their studies, he takes them on college trips, and he supports them in countless other ways, never looking for recognition, as an important father figure in their lives.”

Earlier this year, Peters learned he won the CalHi Sports Coach of the Year award. That means, by two different metrics, Peters is California Football Coach of the Year.
