49ers Lose To Cardinals, Quarterback Under Review

Santa Clara – After tonight’s loss, the Forty-Niners have some decisions to make when it comes to their next quarterback. Blaine Gabbert didn’t have his best game nor did anyone for that matter. The 49ers crushing 33-21 loss to the Arizona Cardinals was the worst defeat of the season.

 
“It’s extremely frustrating,” said Gabbert. “I let this team and this organization down tonight and did not play good whatsoever and that’s on me.

“I had two crucial turnovers there that led to points for the Cardinals and that was the difference in the game right there.”

Arizona converted 17 points off there turnovers by the 49ers including two interceptions by Gabbert and a fumble kickoff return by Chris Davis who was carted off the field with a knee injury in the third quarter and did not return. Gabbert over threw receivers and managed to have 10 carries for 70 yards that included one touchdown.

With a 1-4 record, head coach Chip Kelly has no choice but to make changes where needed including a quarterback change. San Francisco looked more like a college team than a professional one. The 49ers struggles continued on third down along with three dropped passes by Garrett Celek.

The only guy Gabbert connected with was Jeremy Kerley who finished with 8 receptions for 102 yards which included one touchdown. Gabbert went 18-for-31 for 162 yards with the touchdown to Kerley. Drew Stanton on the other hand, threw two touchdown passes to Larry Fitzgerald in his first start in two years while Carson Palmer sat out due to concussion protocols.

“It’s inside two minutes when we turn it over on the tip pass to make it 7-7,” Kelly said. “Then to open up right in the beginning of the third quarter there and have the fumble on the kickoff and then I think all three of our turnovers occurred in the red zone which is even worse. It took them 41-yards to get 17 points out of it so against a good team like Arizona that’s just not going to cut it.”

The first quarter consisted of punts from both teams as the 49ers and Cardinals went scoreless until the second quarter. San Francisco’s offense didn’t get going until late in the second. Gabbert found an open Kerley for the 9 yard touchdown. While the 49ers defense tried their best to hold Arizona to 7 points. At the two minute mark, Gabbert’s pass intended for Celek was tipped and intercepted by Calais Campbell.

That setup Stanton’s 21-yard pass to Fitzgerald in the end zone for the touchdown tying the game 7-7 to end the first half. The 49ers woos continued, they fumbled the ball to start the third quarter. Davis the ball carrier was stripped by Ifeanyi Momah who recovered the fumble. Chandler Catanzaro attempted to kick a 21-yard field goal, a flag on the play due to running into the kicker.

The Cardinals got the first down down instead on their goal line. David Johnson rushed into the end zone for a 4-yd touchdown to extend Arizona’s lead 14-7. On their next drive Stanton connected with Fitzgerald again for a 29-yard touchdown making it a 21-7 game. But don’t count San Francisco out yet. Gabbert scrambled for 24 yards after being unable to find an open receiver.

He then made a complete pass to Quinton Patton for 9 yards that setup Carlos Hyde 1-yard touchdown trimming their lead 21-14. Heading into the fourth, the 49ers had a good run until Marcus Cooper intercepted Gabbert’s pass intended for Kerley. That setup Catanzaro 36-yard field goal making it a 24-14 game. Later in the fourth Johnson rushed for a 2-yard touchdown.

From there it’s pretty obvious San Francisco needs an immediate quarterback change. Kelly addressed the media after the game deflecting questions on if Colin Kaepernick would get his first start of the season. While Kelly has stated repeatedly that Kaepernick is injured with a shoulder sprain, Kaepernick has confirmed that he is 100% healthy and ready to play football.

“I don’t think tonight we’re going to talk about that,” Kelly said. “We’re going to go look at everything. We have a couple days off here in terms of getting ready for Buffalo and then we’ll asses the film and we’ll move from there.”

“I think we’re going to look at everything. I mean, we’re 1-4. We need to make sure we’re going out there and giving us the best chance to win, so we’re going to look at everything.”

Tuesday night was anything but ordinary for fans in San Francisco as Seth Curry made his highly anticipated debut as a new member of the Golden State Warriors. Seth didn’t disappoint, delivering a performance that not only showcased his scoring ability but also demonstrated his added value to the team.

At 35, the 12-year NBA veteran on Monday signed a contract to play with the Warriors for the rest of the season.

One of the most memorable moments of the evening came before Seth even scored his first points. As he checked into the game, the Chase Center erupted into applause, with fans rising to their feet to give the newest Warrior a standing ovation.

The crowd’s reaction was a testament not only to Seth’s reputation as a sharpshooter but also to the excitement he brings to the Warriors. It was clear that fans quickly embraced Seth as one of their own, eager to see what he could bring to the team’s championship aspirations.

Warriors’ superstar Steph Curry – Seth’s brother – did not play due to an injury. One could only imagine what it would be like if the Curry brothers were on the court together. Magic in the making.

Seth’s debut proved to be a turning point for the Warriors. Not only did he contribute on the scoreboard, but he also brought a sense of confidence and composure to the floor.

While their loss last night, OKC 124 – GSW 112, Seth’s impact was a game-changer and there’s more yet to come. Beyond statistics, it was clear that Seth’s presence elevated the team’s performance, giving the Warriors a new force as they look to make a deep playoff run.

Team installs new nets at playgrounds, holds flag-raisings at City Halls in Oakland and S.F.

The Golden State Valkyries brought the excitement of their inaugural season to every corner of the Bay Area with a full slate of community celebrations leading up to their historic home-opener against the Los Angeles Sparks at the Chase Center in San Francisco on Friday.

The week featured flag-raising ceremonies at city halls in Oakland and San Francisco, three “Violet Net” installation days at Oakland parks to encourage basketball play, fun “Hoopbus” takeovers at multiple schools presented by Kaiser Permanente, and player appearances.

In total, 90 violet nets were installed on 45 basketball courts across 34 public parks throughout Oakland this week. A list of the parks receiving violet nets can be found at Valkyries.com.

McClymonds High Names School Gym for Star Graduate, Basketball Legend Bill Russell

William “Bill” Felton Russell was born on Feb. 12, 1934, and died on July 31, 2022. He achieved fame as a U.S. professional basketball player who played center for the Boston Celtics of the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1956 to 1969. He was the centerpiece of the Celtics dynasty that won 11 NBA championships during his 13-year career.

West Oakland’s McClymonds High School, “the School of Champions,” this week named the school’s gymnasium in honor of one of its most famous graduates, basketball legend Bill Russell (class of ’52).

Russell is widely known as one of the greatest basketball players of all time. In 2011, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the country’s highest civil honor, from President Barack Obama for Russell’s contributions to basketball and the Civil Rights Movement.

The McClymonds’ naming ceremony was held on Wednesday, the same day as Russell’s birthday. Oakland leader Bill Patterson, a longtime friend of Russell’s, was scheduled to cut the ribbon at the reopening of the gym, which had been closed for several months for renovation. Russell’s daughter Karen was scheduled to attend the ribbon cutting.

Russell’s name and signature are now printed on the gymnasium floor.

Patterson was working at DeFremery Park when he met Russell. “I befriended him as a boy and during his years at University of San Francisco” said Patterson. “We stayed friends for the rest of his life.”

Said McClymonds Principal Darielle Davis, herself a McClymonds graduate, “We are excited to honor Bill Russell for his sports accolades and because he broke color barriers. He is part of our legacy, and legacy is really important at McClymonds.”

Brian McGhee, community schools manager at McClymonds and former football player at UC Berkeley, said that Russell meant a lot to him and others at the school. “He was a beacon of light and hope for West Oakland,” he said. “He did a lot for sports and for civil rights.”

Starting in 2018, Ben “Coach” Tapscott worked with Patterson and other McClymonds grads, community members, and former coaches to encourage the Oakland Board of Education to endorse the naming of the school gym, which finally happened recently.

“We worked hard to make this happen,” said Tapscott. “He’s an important part of McClymond’s history, along with a lot of other famous graduates,” he said.
