City Workers Picket Mayor Libby Schaaf After Empty Negotiations

City workers represented by SEIU 1021 walk off the job Thursday afternoon after six months of fruitless negotiations with the City.
As Mayor Libby Schaaf delivered her State of the City Address at the Islamic Cultural Center, city workers and supporters picketed outside, delivering what they call the “Real State of Oakland.”
Workers participating in the one-day strike are negotiating for a wage increase and solutions to workplace concerns, including understaffed departments, overwork and health and safety issues. Chief union negotiator Vin Harrington said the city has shown little interest in their proposals addressing illegal dumping, the housing crisis, and vaccinations for employees.
