Gabby Douglas Wax Figure at Fisherman’s Wharf Opens June 26th
Olympic Gold Medal Gymnast Gabriel “Gabby” Douglas visited Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum this week at Fisherman’s Wharf to get the first look of her wax statue.
Douglas shrieked with excitement as she viewed the life size statue of her performing a routine from her winning performance in the 2012 Olympics. She says she “never” imagined she would have a statue made in her honor.
“I am stunned that there would be a Madame Tussaud’s wax figure even made of me at all, but to see the likeness and the incredible work they have done with it is even more overwhelming to experience today,” she said.
“I love that they created the figure with me actually doing a gymnastics routine on the balance beam!” Douglas added.
It took a team of 20 artists and roughly three to four months for the statue to be created. Each strand of hair was individually placed and the figure was covered with five coats of paint to capture Douglass’ skin color perfectly. The leotard placed on the figure was donated by Douglass and is the one she wore when competing in the 2012 Olympic.
“Gabby is an extraordinary athlete and amazing role model for young women around the world. This figure is one of the most unique in the entire attraction,” said Lauren Fahrer, Marketing Manager for Madame Tussaud’s San Francisco.
Douglas hopes to make another big splash in the 2016 Olympics and says she currently is living in Des Moines, Iowa where she is training. She knows there is pressure for her to bring “upgraded skill set and a different style of gymnastics” she said.
The Gabby Douglas attraction at Madame Tussaud’s at Fisherman’s Wharf will open to the public on June 26th.
