A’s Get Second Consecutive Win Against Yankees

Oakland, CA – Sonny Gray was a gem on the mound and got the help he needed for the 6-2 victory over the Yankees. The A’s scored four runs in the third to back their ace while Brett Lawrie secured the win when he homered in the eighth. It was the first time at home this season that Oakland recorded back-to-back wins in a series.

Gray missed one pitch when he gave up a leadoff walk to Brett Gardner in the first. He settled in to strike out Chase Headley while the defense turned a double play on Alex Rodriguez to end the inning.

 

Gray looked sharp tossing four scoreless innings. But the A’s offense couldn’t capitalize off Chris Capuano’s mistakes in the second when he loaded the bases with two walks and a single. Mark Canha flew out to left field to end the frame stranding three.

 

“With Sonny on the other side, you knew runs were going to be at a premium,” Capuano said. “He pitched great.”

 

“In a season that’s been kind of tough to get wins, he gives you a chance every time he’s on the mound,” catcher Josh Phegley said.

 

Oakland got another opportunity in the third, Billy Burns led off with a double and Marcus Semien followed with a single. Ben Zobrist grounded a single past third baseman, Headley for the error and scored in Burns making it a 2-0 game.

 

Billy Butler followed with a double to drive in Semien while Stephen Vogt cleared the bases with a two-run double extending the A’s lead 4-0. They scored four runs off Capuano who composed himself to retire the next three batters to end the inning.

 

“It’s just a play that I feel like I have to make,” said Headley. “You’ve got to make that play. Cap made a big pitch right there, I catch that and turn a double play, we may be out of there with one run. Obviously disappointing and another play that I probably should have made.”

 

Capuano shut down Oakland’s offense after they took an early lead in the third. He tossed 5 1/3 innings, allowing six hits and struck out four. New York tried to chip away at the A’s lead. Didi Gregorius led off the sixth with a double and Gardner scored him in when he grounded out to end the inning.

 

By the fifth Gray fell victim to Brian McCann’s whose solo shot made him the first Yankee to homer in four straight games while playing catcher since Mike Stanley from July 20-25, 1993. He’s the first catcher in the Majors with a streak as long as this season.

 

“I’m making small adjustments here and there,” McCann said. “Honestly, I feel like I’ve been swinging the bat well all year. Now I’m kind of getting more lift in my swing and the balls are leaving the ballpark.”

 

The A’s got the insurance run they need when Lawrie’s two-run homer extended their lead 6-2 in the eighth. Vogt led off the frame with a walk and Lawrie followed with his second home run in the series. Oakland’s offensive struggles seem to be further and further behind them. Especially their challenges against left-handed pitchers. Tonight they took advantage of Capuano.

 

They have won five of the last seven games after losing fourteen of the previous sixteen contests. The A’s starting pitchers are 4-1 with a 1.00 ERA over the last seven games. They’re now up 2-0 in a four-game series.

 

“Sonny’s just so special, and what he did tonight was very impressive and exactly what we needed to continue on this path,” said Vogt. “We’ve been playing such good baseball, and to have a start like that from your ace is huge.”

Oakland Housing and Community Development Department Awards $80.5 Million to Affordable Housing Developments

The City of Oakland’s Housing and Community Development Department (Oakland HCD) announced its awardees for the 2024-2025 New Construction of Multifamily Affordable Housing Notice of Funding Availability (New Construction NOFA) today Five permanently affordable housing developments received awards out of 24 applications received by the Department, with award amounts ranging from $7 million to $28 million.

In a statement released on Jan. 16, Oakland’s HCD stated, “Five New Construction Multifamily Affordable Housing Development projects awarded a total of $80.5 million to develop 583 affordable rental homes throughout Oakland. Awardees will leverage the City’s investments to apply for funding from the state and private entities.”

In December, the office of Rebecca Kaplan, interim District 2 City Councilmember, worked with HCD to allocate an additional $10 Million from Measure U to the funding pool. The legislation also readopted various capital improvement projects including street paving and upgrades to public facilities.

The following Oakland affordable housing developments have been awarded in the current round:

Mandela Station Affordable

  • 238 Affordable Units including 60 dedicated for Homeless/Special Needs
  • Award: $15 million + previously awarded $18 million
  • Developer: Mandela Station LP (Pacific West Communities, Inc. and Strategic Urban Development Alliance, LLC)
  • City Council District: 3
  • Address: 1451 7th St.

Liberation Park Residences

  • 118 Affordable Units including 30 dedicated for Homeless/Special Needs
  • Award: $28 million
  • Developer: Eden Housing and Black Cultural Zone
  • City Council District: 6
  • Address: 7101 Foothill Blvd.

34th & San Pablo

  •  59 Affordable Units including 30 dedicated for Homeless/Special Needs
  • Award: $7 million
  • Developer: 34SP Development LP (EBALDC)
  • City Council District: 3
  • Address: 3419-3431 San Pablo Ave.

The Eliza

  • 96 Affordable Units including 20 dedicated for Homeless/Special Needs
  • Award: $20 million
  • Developer: Mercy Housing California
  • City Council District: 3
  • Address: 2125 Telegraph Ave.

3135 San Pablo

  • 72 Affordable Units including 36 dedicated for Homeless/Special Needs
  • Award: $10.5 million

The County of Alameda announced this week that a deal allowing the Oakland Acquisition Company, LLC, (“OAC”) to acquire the County’s 50% undivided interest in the Oakland- Alameda County Coliseum complex is in the final stages of completion.

The Board of Supervisors is committed to closing the deal expeditiously, and County staff have worked tirelessly to move the deal forward on mutually agreeable terms. The parties are down to the final details and, with the cooperation of OAC and Coliseum Way Partners, LLC, the Board will take a public vote at an upcoming meeting to seal this transaction.

Oakland has already finalized a purchase and sale agreement with OAC for its interest in the property. OAC’s acquisition of the County’s property interest will achieve two longstanding goals of the County:

  • The Oakland-Alameda Coliseum complex will finally be under the control of a sole owner with capacity to make unilateral decisions regarding the property; and
  • The County will be out of the sports and entertainment business, free to focus and rededicate resources to its core safety net

In an October 2024 press release from the City of Oakland, the former Oakland mayor described the sale of its 50% interest in the property as an “historic achievement” stating that the transaction will “continue to pay dividends for generations to come.”

The Board of Supervisors is pleased to facilitate single-entity ownership of this property uniquely centered in a corridor of East Oakland that has amazing potential.

“The County is committed to bringing its negotiations with OAC to a close,” said Board President David Haubert.
