Mayor Schaaf Asks Churchgoers to Rent a Room to Homeless But Won’t Use City Funds to Help

Published

On Sunday morning, Dec. 10, Mayor Libby Schaaf will attend a breakfast and discussion on homelessness in West Oakland, hosted by the Market Street Seventh Day Adventist Church, 900 – 34th St.

The event features breakfast at 9 a.m., followed by a discussion from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The event is open to the public, including church members, neighborhood residents – with and without homes – and homeless advocacy organizations. Arnold Perkins, who formerly headed the Alameda County Public Health Department, will moderate the discussion.

Market Street SDA Church Deacon Earl Jacobs said, “We call the homeless our neighbors without roofs.  How can a homeless strategy be developed without hearing from the homeless themselves. We have reached out to them to attend.”

Mayor Schaaf’s homeless plan appears to be building Tuff sheds and asking Oakland residents to “rent-a-room” to the homeless.

At an Allen Temple Town Hall on Sept. 22, Mayor Schaaf said, “Look around your houses and see if you have a room you can rent to a homeless person; you could probably use the money.”

City shelters are at capacity, and the homeless population in Oakland continues to grow. Avocacy organizations estimate there are as many as 2,600 people are homeless in Oakland.
