President Obama to Deliver Eulogy at Funeral Friday for Rev. Clementa Pinckney in Charleston
By Post Staff and news reports
President Barack Obama will deliver the eulogy Friday at Rev. Clementa Pinckney’s funeral in Charleston, South Carolina.
Pastor Pinckney was among the nine people shot and killed in a terrorist attack during a prayer service at a historically Black church in Charleston last week. He was a South Carolina Senator and the head of the Emanuel AME Church where the shooting took place.
First Lady Michelle Obama and Vice President Joe Biden will also attend the service in Charleston along with a congressional delegation.
On Wednesday, thousands of mourners streamed past Rev. Pinckney’s open casket before the steps of the state Capitol to pay their respects. That night, Emanuel AME Church opened its doors for its first Bible study since the shooting with over 100 worshippers in attendance.
The session was held in the same basement where the attack had taken place, the church’s interim pastor re-consecrating the room.
“This territory belongs to God,” he said to a crowded room that purportedly shouted in agreement.
The funerals of Ethel Lee Lance and Rev. Sharonda Coleman-Singleton were held on Thursday.
In his eulogy for Ethel Lance, Brian Risher said his grandmother could be seen as a “symbol of love.”
“Hate is powerful,” he said, “But love is more powerful.”
Rev. Coleman-Singleton’s son described his mother as a woman who loved everybody with all her heart. If everyone loved the way she did, hate wouldn’t have a chance, he said.
President Obama will also meet privately with the relatives of the deceased on Friday.
The names of all the victims are:
Cynthia Marie Graham Hurd (54), Susie Jackson (87), Ethel Lee Lance (70), Rev. Depayne Middleton-Doctor (49), Rev. Clementa Pinckney (41), Tywanza Sanders (26), Rev. Daniel Simmons (74), Rev. Sharonda Coleman-Singleton (45), Myra Thompson (59).
The entire Charleston community is in mourning as they lay their loved ones to rest.
