Special Council Hearing for Black Lives Matter, Jan. 24
City Council President Lynette Gibson McElhaney and Councilmember Larry Reid will hold a special Oakland City Council hearing on Saturday, Jan. 24, 1 p.m., at City Hall in the Council Chambers.
The meeting will examine the current condition of Blacks in Oakland with several topical panels: police accountability, criminal justice in Oakland and Alameda County, health disparities, education, employment and economic opportunity, poverty and community development, and more.
“Councilmember Reid and I have called for a special council meeting to hear testimony from community organizations, experts and grassroots leaders regarding the great challenges facing African Americans in this city, and beyond,” said McElhaney.
“We realize this topic is great and worthy of time and preparation,” she explained. “We’re grateful to all of the organizations that are working in partnership to make this meeting meaningful through the development of real solutions to the well-known challenges.”
The meeting will be televised on KTOP Channel 10 and streamed online on the city’s website.
