Vogelsong gets win, out up to six weeks

San Francisco, CA – It’s been a rocky road for starter Ryan Vogelsong.  Struggling to find his rhythm and command on the mound has been a big concern.  There have been talks of sending him down to the bullpen as the Giants did with two-time Cy Young Winner Tim Lincecum.

Coming into tonight’s game Vogelsong had the highest ERA 8.06 among the National League pitchers.  This time he got off to a great start and handed the Washington Nationals a 8-0 shutout performance.  After battling himself for months, Ryan threw 5.0 scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and one walk with two strikeouts.

“It was a good win and it all started with the job that Vogelsong did,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.

Returning to his old form, Ryan’s night didn’t last long.  His outing was cut short after he suffered a fractured right hand.  He was struck on the hand while at-bat in the fifth inning and left the game immediately for x-rays.

“I felt it right away,” he explained.  “That’s the best I felt in a long time, from a mental and physical aspect, everything, it felt good.  It was nice to be able to get out there and have everything I’ve been working on for the past couple of weeks, kind of fall into place.  It’s a good place to start when I come back.”

Vogelsong is expected to be out at least six weeks.  He will undergo surgery tomorrow.  The injury was to his right pinkie which the right-handed pitcher described as a minor surgery compared to a “Tommy John”.  After a complicated season to start, this is another unfortunate him.

“There were a lot of mechanical problems I had to fix, and it wasn’t just one, it was a few,” Ryan said.  “I was lucky enough to have some really good coaches to help me out and Bochy’s patience meant a lot.   It was nice to see the work I’ve been putting in translate into tonight’s game.”

The Giants batters recorded a season-high with 17 hits.  This marked the most hits at AT&T Park since August 25, 2010 against Cincinnati.  The offense got going early in the second frame when they took a 2-0 lead.  Andres Torres’ RBI single and Brandon Crawford’s fielder choice scored in two runs.

The Nationals only threat came in the third when Vogelsong allowed back-to-back hits to Zach Duke and Denard Span.  With two outs Steve Lombardozzi flew out to center fielder Angel Pagan to end the inning. That was the only time runners were in scoring position.

“I felt fine.  Health-wise, stamina, I felt fine,” said Duke.  “Unfortunately, I didn’t execute quite well enough.  Missed some spots and ground balls made their way through.”

Zach’s night ended after 3.1 innings when San Francisco scored three more runs in the fourth.  He allowed four earned runs on seven hits with one strikeout.  Ryan’s sacrifice fly scored Belt, Pagan’s RBI double and Marco Scutaro’s RBI single gave the Giants a 5-0 lead.

“This was a tough one,” said Nationals manager Davey Johnson.  “Been in a lot of funny games, but going into that one being a couple of pitchers short was tough.  I thought w did an adequate job.  I had to really stretch out Henry.”

After a 1-5 road trip, San Francisco returned with an explosive offense.      Brandon Belt went 4-for-5 with a solo home run and four runs scored.  His four hits matched his career-high (fourth time) for four hits in one game.

“Obviously, I felt pretty good out there tonight,” Belt said.  “It was nice to play in front our fans.  They gave us a much needed boost tonight.  I think it raised the intensity level and we played better because of it.”

Oakland Housing and Community Development Department Awards $80.5 Million to Affordable Housing Developments

The City of Oakland’s Housing and Community Development Department (Oakland HCD) announced its awardees for the 2024-2025 New Construction of Multifamily Affordable Housing Notice of Funding Availability (New Construction NOFA) today Five permanently affordable housing developments received awards out of 24 applications received by the Department, with award amounts ranging from $7 million to $28 million.

In a statement released on Jan. 16, Oakland’s HCD stated, “Five New Construction Multifamily Affordable Housing Development projects awarded a total of $80.5 million to develop 583 affordable rental homes throughout Oakland. Awardees will leverage the City’s investments to apply for funding from the state and private entities.”

In December, the office of Rebecca Kaplan, interim District 2 City Councilmember, worked with HCD to allocate an additional $10 Million from Measure U to the funding pool. The legislation also readopted various capital improvement projects including street paving and upgrades to public facilities.

The following Oakland affordable housing developments have been awarded in the current round:

Mandela Station Affordable

  • 238 Affordable Units including 60 dedicated for Homeless/Special Needs
  • Award: $15 million + previously awarded $18 million
  • Developer: Mandela Station LP (Pacific West Communities, Inc. and Strategic Urban Development Alliance, LLC)
  • City Council District: 3
  • Address: 1451 7th St.

Liberation Park Residences

  • 118 Affordable Units including 30 dedicated for Homeless/Special Needs
  • Award: $28 million
  • Developer: Eden Housing and Black Cultural Zone
  • City Council District: 6
  • Address: 7101 Foothill Blvd.

34th & San Pablo

  •  59 Affordable Units including 30 dedicated for Homeless/Special Needs
  • Award: $7 million
  • Developer: 34SP Development LP (EBALDC)
  • City Council District: 3
  • Address: 3419-3431 San Pablo Ave.

The Eliza

  • 96 Affordable Units including 20 dedicated for Homeless/Special Needs
  • Award: $20 million

The County of Alameda announced this week that a deal allowing the Oakland Acquisition Company, LLC, (“OAC”) to acquire the County’s 50% undivided interest in the Oakland- Alameda County Coliseum complex is in the final stages of completion.

The Board of Supervisors is committed to closing the deal expeditiously, and County staff have worked tirelessly to move the deal forward on mutually agreeable terms. The parties are down to the final details and, with the cooperation of OAC and Coliseum Way Partners, LLC, the Board will take a public vote at an upcoming meeting to seal this transaction.

Oakland has already finalized a purchase and sale agreement with OAC for its interest in the property. OAC’s acquisition of the County’s property interest will achieve two longstanding goals of the County:

  • The Oakland-Alameda Coliseum complex will finally be under the control of a sole owner with capacity to make unilateral decisions regarding the property; and
  • The County will be out of the sports and entertainment business, free to focus and rededicate resources to its core safety net

In an October 2024 press release from the City of Oakland, the former Oakland mayor described the sale of its 50% interest in the property as an “historic achievement” stating that the transaction will “continue to pay dividends for generations to come.”

The Board of Supervisors is pleased to facilitate single-entity ownership of this property uniquely centered in a corridor of East Oakland that has amazing potential.

“The County is committed to bringing its negotiations with OAC to a close,” said Board President David Haubert.
