Opinion: Why I support Otheree Christian for School Board

Left to right: Otheree Christian and Mister Phillips

I am proud to endorse Otheree Christian for West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSD), Area 2. As a Richmond native, a graduate of John F. Kennedy High School, an alum of Howard University, former juvenile justice case manager, youth minister, and lead safety officer at El Cerrito High School, we can count on Christian to put our children first.

We can also trust in Christian’s leadership. He has accepted increasing responsibility in our community, including president of the Richmond NAACP, president of the Iron Triangle Neighborhood Council, member of the Richmond Recreation and Parks Commission, member of the Richmond Design Review Board, member of the El Cerrito High School Site Council, advisor to the El Cerrito High School Black Student Union, and advisor to the Richmond NAACP Youth Council.

Christian’s grassroots campaign reflects a leadership style grounded in community, not politics. That is why he is endorsed by diverse organizations like the AFL-CIO, Contra Costa Building and Construction Trades Council, United Teachers of Richmond, Teamsters Local 856, BAPAC, RPA, and BMW.

Christian is also endorsed by local leaders like State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, Trustee John Marquez, former trustee Madeline Kronenberg, Vice Mayor Nat Bates, former mayor Irma Anderson, neighborhood council presidents Myrtle Braxton, Marena Brown, JC Farr, Joe Fisher, Vernon Whitmore, and pastors Raymond Landry, Dana Mitchel, Ulis Redic, and Henry Washington.

On November 3, please vote for Otheree Christian for WCCUSD, Area 2.

Mister Phillips is an attorney at law and a member of the West Contra Costa Unified School District Board. He lives in Richmond with his wife Angela and four children.
