7 Earthquakes Rumble Through Bay Area

Seven earthquakes ranging from magnitude 2.5 to 4.4 shook the Bay Area Tuesday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The first one at 10:40 a.m. was measured at 3.0 near San Martin in southern Santa Clara County. At 7:42 a.m., a 3.3-magnitude quake struck west of Gonzales in the Gabilan Range in San Benito County.

Seven earthquakes ranging from magnitude 2.5 to 4.4 shook the Bay Area Tuesday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The first one at 10:40 a.m. was measured at 3.0 near San Martin in southern Santa Clara County. At 7:42 a.m., a 3.3-magnitude quake struck west of Gonzales in the Gabilan Range in San Benito County.

The seismic activity move north for the rest of the evening and included five quakes in less than an hour in the northwest corner of Sonoma County along the border with Lake County in the Mayacmas Mountains.

The nearest towns are Cloverdale, about 20 miles west, and Cobb, about 5 miles east in Lake County.

Those ranged from magnitude 2.8 to 4.4 between 10:39 p.m. and 11:31 p.m.

No injuries were reported in any of the quakes.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, people typically report being able to feel earthquakes larger than about magnitude 2.5.
