Dance Soloist John Lam Honored in San Rafael

John Lam, Ballet Dancer

John Lam, a soloist dancer from the Boston Ballet, will be honored in a program, “On Stage for Life” on Friday, April 12, presented by Performing Stars of Marin and the City of San Rafael at the Al Boro Community Center on 50 Canal Street in San Rafael.
A reception will be held from 11 a.m. to noon for Lam, whose career started at the age of 4 training with the Performing Stars of Marin.
Following the reception, a community celebration will be held from noon to 1 p.m. The Mistress of Ceremonies will be Cheryl Jennings, anchor of ABC Channel 7 News.
Lam grew up in a Vietnamese-Chinese Family in the Canal District of San Rafael. After working with Performing Stars of Marin, he continued his studies with the Marin Ballet School on full scholarship.
He attended San Pedro Elementary School and continued his high school education at Canada’s National Ballet School, also on scholarship.
He joined Boston Ballet II in 2003 and was promoted to the company in 2004. He competed in the Seoul International Ballet Competition and the Helsinki International Ballet Competition in 2005 and received the 2005 Princess Grace Fellowship.
Lam was promoted to second soloist in 2006 and to soloist in 2008.
His repertory with Boston Ballet includes George Balanchine’s “The Four Temperaments” (Melancholic), as Oberon in “A Midsummer’s Night Dream,” “Divertimento No. 15,” and “Serenade and Symphony in Three Movements.” Lam also danced in Maina Gielgud’s “Giselle”, August Bournonville’s “La Sylphide,” Rudolf Nureyev’s “Don Quixote,” Mikko Nissinen’s “The Nutcracker,” and Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake.”
He has been seen in world premieres of Jorma Elo’s “Carmen,” “Brake the Eyes,” “In on Blue,” Helen Pickett’s “Etesian and Eventide,” and Mark Morris’ “Up and Down.”
“My journey to becoming a professional ballet dancer all started with a seed planted by my inspiration from the Performing Stars of Marin,” he said. “I believe there would have been little chance that I would become such a fulfilled human being and dancer without having been introduced to this awesome organization and its dance program.
“Performing Stars not only allows kids from all different social and economic backgrounds to be fully engaged in the performing arts, but their programs also touch many communities allowing them to strive and have their children ‘reach for the stars’ and excel to their full potential as human beings,” he said. “Performing Stars opened the door to my ever growing love for dance, and I shall be forever grateful for the opportunity to be a participant in and product of this fantastic organization.”
Lam will be performing at the Marin Ballet’s 50th year anniversary on April 13.

Oakland Housing and Community Development Department Awards $80.5 Million to Affordable Housing Developments

The City of Oakland’s Housing and Community Development Department (Oakland HCD) announced its awardees for the 2024-2025 New Construction of Multifamily Affordable Housing Notice of Funding Availability (New Construction NOFA) today Five permanently affordable housing developments received awards out of 24 applications received by the Department, with award amounts ranging from $7 million to $28 million.

In a statement released on Jan. 16, Oakland’s HCD stated, “Five New Construction Multifamily Affordable Housing Development projects awarded a total of $80.5 million to develop 583 affordable rental homes throughout Oakland. Awardees will leverage the City’s investments to apply for funding from the state and private entities.”

In December, the office of Rebecca Kaplan, interim District 2 City Councilmember, worked with HCD to allocate an additional $10 Million from Measure U to the funding pool. The legislation also readopted various capital improvement projects including street paving and upgrades to public facilities.

The following Oakland affordable housing developments have been awarded in the current round:

Mandela Station Affordable

238 Affordable Units including 60 dedicated for Homeless/Special Needs
Award: $15 million + previously awarded $18 million

The Board of Supervisors is committed to closing the deal expeditiously, and County staff have worked tirelessly to move the deal forward on mutually agreeable terms. The County of Alameda announced this week that a deal allowing the Oakland Acquisition Company, LLC, (“OAC”) to acquire the County’s 50% undivided interest in the Oakland- Alameda County Coliseum complex is in the final stages of completion.

Oakland has already finalized a purchase and sale agreement with OAC for its interest in the property. OAC’s acquisition of the County’s property interest will achieve two longstanding goals of the County:

The Oakland-Alameda Coliseum complex will finally be under the control of a sole owner with capacity to make unilateral decisions regarding the property; and
The County will be out of the sports and entertainment business, free to focus and rededicate resources to its core safety net

In an October 2024 press release from the City of Oakland, the former Oakland mayor described the sale of its 50% interest in the property as an “historic achievement” stating that the transaction will “continue to pay dividends for generations to come.”

The Board of Supervisors is pleased to facilitate single-entity ownership of this property uniquely centered in a corridor of East Oakland that has amazing potential.

“The County is committed to bringing its negotiations with OAC to a close,” said Board President David Haubert.
