Oakland PIC’s Safeway Job Fair Hires 148 People for New Grocery Store
More than 100 job applicants received job offers on Wednesday, Aug. 17 at the Oakland Private Industry Council’s second Safeway Job Fair.
Recruiters conducted interviews, background checks and drug screenings for 288 job seekers – who included unemployed applicants, people laid off by WalMart in Oakland this year, and enrollees in the Oakland Housing Authority Jobs Plus Pilot Program in partnership with Oakland PIC.
As a result of Safeway Job Fairs on Aug. 10 and August 17, 148 people were offered jobs at the new store that Safeway is opening at 51st and Broadway in Oakland.
Applicants waited patiently during the hiring process, and for many of them, it was well worth it.
“It was a long process, but to be honest it was all worth it. I got a job now, and I should be starting work at Safeway soon,” said Davyon Frey, who was hired Wednesday, along with his brother, as day stockers.
“It was a good experience for me,” Frey said. Safeway will open the new store on Sept. 11.
