Oakland Principals Back Teachers, Call for Increased State Funding for Schools
Oakland Principals went to Sacramento this week to lobby state legislators to help solve the
Oakland Unified School District’s financial crisis.
The principals spoke to the legislators in support of striking teachers and calling for dramatically increased investment in education, state forgiveness of the 2003 bailout loan to the district that costs OUSD $6 million a year and “re-evaluation and revision of the (state) charter law, which drains the district of resources.
In addition, 75 Oakland principals signed an open letter, dated Feb. 18, to “call upon the
community and state of California to support teachers and students by increasing funding to public school districts.”
